In this case refusing to ever let go. Leonard is trapped between his yearning for freedom and his deep tie to his mother. A Jewish boy railing against his mother he expresses both comfort under her wing but also a rage, a desire to cut loose. The presence of unconscious sexual and violent wishes begin to worm their way through his consciousness. A longing develops for a world in which the castrating mother's knife is turned the other way.
