The story takes place in a Tokyo neighborhood in 1868, when the army has evacuated this part of the city. It is about to invade the streets to drive out the rebels, hostile to the reforms of the Japanese government. In one of these deserted streets flooded by the rain a tramp appears, Shinko, who hides from the downpour in the private part of the shop. He is greeted by Kuro the house cat, who seems to know him. A young servant girl shows up, Otomi, who immediately recognizes the neighborhood tramp. From the very start, the situation is tense between them...
