Following the success of La Fanciulla del West, which had its first-ever performance at the Met in 1910, Giacomo Puccini premiered a second opera, Il Trittico, with the company eight years later. Consisting of a trio of contrasting one-act pieces, the work opens with the grimly veristic tragedy Il Tabarro, moves onto the impassioned tearjerker Suor Angelica, and closes with the broad farce Gianni Schicchi. In this 1981 telecast of the triptych’s final installment, French baritone Gabriel Bacquier stars in the title role, the Florentine parvenu who comes to the aid of Donati family—only to then cheat them out of their coveted inheritance. Tenor Philip Creech is the ardent Rinuccio, alongside soprano Renata Scotto as his beloved Lauretta. James Levine is on the podium to conduct Puccini’s masterful sole comedy.
